Data collected

  • Member account: display name, email, bio, public tagline, boat/spot, profile photo.
  • Content you publish: forum posts, classifieds, photos submitted to the photo wall.
  • Browsing: a login cookie (to keep you signed in) and, if the site is password-protected, a technical cookie for that — both strictly necessary for the site to function, never used for any other purpose.
  • Your preferences: a cookie remembering the language you chose, and, on the weather page, your preferred display mode (simple or detailed) stored in your browser — used only to apply your choice.
  • Anonymous audience measurement: we use Vercel Analytics, which does not set a cookie and cannot identify you individually — it counts page visits in aggregate. We also use Vercel Speed Insights, which does not set a cookie either, to measure page loading speed on a sample of visits.
  • Incident reporting: if you use the "Report an incident" button, present sitewide and open to everyone (not just members), we collect your name (if you provide it), a way to contact you back, and the description you supply — solely so the Board can follow up.

Some pages embed third-party content (Windguru forecasts, OpenStreetMap base maps, the Surfr leaderboard) which may, on their own, set their own cookies under their own rules — we have no control over these.

Why, and on what basis

  • Member management (account, membership dues, association communication): necessary for the life of the association you are a member of.
  • Showing you on the public member directory (your display name, plus the photo and public tagline if you add them): turned on by default when your account is created as you join, in the association's legitimate interest in introducing its members — you can turn it off at any time in your account settings.
  • Publishing photos you appear in (photo wall, social media): only with your consent, given in your account settings and withdrawable at any time.
  • Forum and classifieds: content you choose to publish yourself.
  • Incident reporting: the association's legitimate interest in ensuring the safety of its members and the public on the spots — these reports are kept long-term, with no duration set in advance, to maintain a full incident history.

Retention period

Your data is kept for as long as you are an active member of the association. After you leave, it is deleted or anonymised within a reasonable time, except where the law requires longer retention (accounting, for instance). Incident reports are an exception: they are kept indefinitely, as the association's safety record.

Your rights

Under the GDPR, you have the right to access, rectify, erase, object to, and port your data. Most of your information (bio, public tagline, photo consent, member-directory visibility) can be changed directly in your member area. For any other request — including asking for the removal of an already-published photo you appear in — write to us at contact@kite-en-re.org. You may also lodge a complaint with the CNIL (the French data protection authority).

Security and hosting

The site is hosted on Vercel, and the data on Supabase, both with encryption in transit. Access to member data is restricted to the association's Board for the purposes of its management.

Report an incident

An accident, a near-collision, dangerous behaviour? Describe what happened — the Board will get back to you. Open to everyone, not just members.
